In light of the SCFC burn ban, which went into effect on April 7, 2020, Blacksburg Fire Chief Donovan Ford has banned all burning types in town limits, as well as our response district as a whole. The South Carolina Forestry Commission has enacted a complete and total burn ban across the state effective 4/7/2020.

The current ideal conditions for a potentially devastating wildfire coupled with a low inversion layer in the near future, which results in low laying smoke, were the reasons behind the ban. The winter months bring about the need for yard cleaning; this can include yard debris burning. The winter months are also wildfire season in South Carolina. A small ember can travel up to a mile away and ignite a wildfire. Low humidity, dry fuels, and slight winds is the perfect remedy to ignite a potentially devastating wildfire.

On 10/3/2019 at approximately 3:40pm, units were dispatched to the 500 block of S. Rutherford St. for a report of a structure fire. On arrival, units encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions. The fire was declared under control within 30 minutes of arrival.

While the home was severely damaged, the occupants were able to escape the home with no injuries reported.
