Regional One Landing Zone at Lenzer Circle

February 14

At approximately 1:10 p.m. Blacksburg Fire Department responded to Lenzer circle ball field per the request of EMS to establish a landing Zone for regional one.

Upon arrival at the ball field, Engine 93 established Landing Zone command and coordinated with the inbound Regional One medical helicopter for a safe landing Zone.

No Caption Low hanging power lines cause minor delays in downtown Blacksburg

February 13

At approximately 7:10 a.m. Blacksburg fire was dispatched to 140 Rutherford Street in reference to low hanging power lines. Upon arrival a secondary power line was discovered drooping approximately 5 feet off of the ground. The wireless connected to the Transformer and the power Pole across the street.

The Wilderness Trail Inferno

February 13

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on February 12th Blacksburg Fire Department was dispatched Mutual Aid with CKC Fire Department referencing a single story residential structure fire. Upon arrival the structure which was determined to be a single wide mobile home was fully involved.

At approximately 8:10 a.m. Blacksburg fire department was dispatched to mile marker 102 southbound on-ramp of Interstate 85 referencing a single vehicle motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, the patient was located on the side of the interstate sitting on the guardrail with minor injuries. The patient was treated and transported by Upstate Carolina EMS. Hit and Run on Highway 29

February 06

At approximately 7:05 a.m. Blacksburg fire department was dispatched to the vicinity of the 1500 Block of West Cherokee Street in reference to a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival with EMS a single occupant of a black SUV was located at the site. Thankfully the patient sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to the hospital.

Station 9 responded automatic aid with CKC Fire Department at approximately 3:45am to the corner of Wilderness Trail and Mullinax Circle in Blacksburg regarding an abandoned structure fire. The fire was reported by a sheriff deputy on routine patrol.

At approximately 5:00pm, Blacksburg Fire Department responded with Antioch and CKC fire departments referencing an 18 Wheeler.

Upon arrival, the vehicle was located at mile marker 104 facing north bound on the southbound size of Interstate 85. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle, contracted patient assessment, and extricated the entrapped driver after approximately 30 minutes.

Driving Safely On Ice and Snow

HVAC Hazards

HVAC systems are a modern convenience that supply many structures, both commercial and residential, with heating and air conditioning.

The danger here is that the ventilation system can provide for both smoke and heat transfer from an HVAC unit if it catches fire.

Wildfire Season Is Upon Us

We normally see humidity in the 50-80% area during the spring and summer months.

However, now that we are into winter time, our humidity drops to anywhere between 19-35%. Humidity is essentially the saturation of the air by water, expressed in percentages. When the dryer, colder air sets in for the winter time, it, in turn, drinks out grass, timber, slash and yard debris.

Fire Prevention Is A Team Effort

While firefighters' main purpose is to suppress and extinguish fire, our other purpose is to promote fire preventing and safety.

This story from Anderson, SC presents the real danger for residents in their homes. According to the NFPA, approximately 82% of fire fatalities occur at a residence between the hours of 6pm to 6am.
