Spring Cleaning: Fire Hazards

We are approaching that time of year; opening windows, decluttering from another winter, and welcoming the spring with open arms. With this "spring cleaning" comes many fire hazards that people may often overlook.

Ventilation system filters should be inspected and changed. Dust accumulation can cause a severe fire hazard.

February 12

At approximately 7:06am, Blacksburg units were dispatched to 914 N. Mountain Street in reference to an odor of gas. On arrival, units inspected a gas-powered grill in the kitchen area that had residual gas odor around it. Units cut off gas at the main valve just behind the grill. Electrical Wheelchair Fire

February 12

At approximately 9:48am, units were dispatched to reports of a vehicle fire involving an electrical wheelchair. On arrival, the wheelchair was noted emitting smoke and fire. The occupant was located approximately 10 feet from the wheelchair on the ground. The occupant stated he did not suffer any injury and declined medical treatment. January 21

At approximately 9:30, Blacksburg hazmat was requested to respond to a spill involving an 18 wheeler at the highway 18 and highway 5 intersection in rural Blacksburg.

On arrival, UN placards indicated the product in the trailer was a Class 8, or, corrosive product. Units dammed the runoff and provided defensive hazmat operations.

On 1/16/2019 at about 7:02pm, Blacksburg units were alarmed to a structure fire on the 800 block of W. Pine Street.

On arrival, multiple gallons of an unknown substance were found spread across the Flying J truck stop and down highway 5.

No Caption 2- Vehicle Accident with one minor injury

November 14

On 11/13 2018 at approximately 11 a.m. Blacksburg units for dispatch to the intersection of Highway 29 and Moss Crossing in reference to a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival one minor injury was reported. The patient was transported non-emergent to Mary Black of Gaffney.

Units then rendered the vehicle safe and directed traffic until the vehicles were removed from the scene.

3- Vehicle Motor Vehicle Accident Sends One To Hospital

October 27

On 10/26/2018 at approximately 4:40pm, units were dispatched to the 900 block of North Mountain Street in reference to a three-vehicle motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, units assessed the the people involved in the accident and determined that there was only one minor injury. That person was transported non-emergent to the hospital.

Landing Zone Mutual Aid With Buffalo Fire

October 16

On October 15th at approximately 9:50 a.m. Blacksburg Fire Personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 18 and Bridges Road to establish a landing Zone for two patients who have been involved in a motor vehicle accident.

3 vehicle collision sends two to hospital

October 12

At approximately 1:00pm, Blacksburg units responded to reports of an accident with injuries on the 1300 block of W. Cherokee St.

On arrival, three vehicles were noted in the north bound lane of highway 29. A chain reaction had occurred, resulting in one vehicle striking the one in front of it. The two passengers in the front vehicle were transported with minor injuries.

On 9/22/18 at approximately 3:00pm, Blacksburg units responded to a report of fuel leaking from the pumps at the BP on N. Mountain St.

Upon arrival, units quickly deployed oil dry and pads to contain the fuel.

Copperhead Bite Airlifts One

September 17

On 9/17/2018, at approximately 9:20pm, Blacksburg units responded to reports of a snake bite at Food Lion parking lot.

Upon arrival, units made contact with a male patient with a wound to his ankle. Patient was able to tell personnel that he was bitten as he was taking the trash out. The snake was recovered from his home, and confirmed to be a copperhead snake.

Structure Fire

July 23

At approximately 10:50 p.m. on July 22nd station 9 responded along with CKC Buffalo and Antioch fire departments referencing a structure fire on the corner of West Carolina Street and North Chester Street.

On 6/8/2018, Blacksburg Fire responded to the 300 block of Cherokee Street in reference to a 2 car motor vehicle accident.

On arrival, all occupied were out of the vehicle, with no injuries reported.

No Caption Extended service outage for Northern Blacksburg, Grover on Friday

May 18

Broad River Electric has scheduled an extended service outage for members in the North Blacksburg and Grover areas.

Weather permitting, this outage will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 18. The loss of service could be as long as 8 hours for some members.

This planned outage is required so that Broad River Electric’s power supplier can perform scheduled maintenance on essential equipment.
